Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR)
The HCMR is a legal entity under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, and is governed by the provisions of Law 1514/85 and Presidential Decree 164 (Government Gazette 131 / 3.6.03), it is based in Anavyssos Attica and consists of three Research Institutes: (a) Oceanography (b) Marine biological resources and inland waters; (c) Marine biology, biotechnology and aquaculture. It has three (3) manned oceanographic vessels, two (2) radio-controlled and one (1) manned submarine vehicle for conducting marine research. The HCMR staff consists of research, technical, legal, nautical and administrative staff which amounts to about 400 people in total. The HCMR has premises in Anavyssos, Agios Kosmas, Heraklion, Crete and Rhodes.
Purpose of the HCMR is to conduct scientific and technological research, experimental development and demonstration, dissemination and implementation of research results, particularly in the fields of study and protection of the hydrosphere, its organisms, its boundaries with the atmosphere, the coast and the seabed, (a) production of products and services; (b) support for decision-making concerning society, economy, culture;
For the achievement of its objectives, the HCMR:
- designs and implements research and technology projects
- promotes the development of relationships and partnerships with international organizations, related Research Greek Institutions and abroad as well as legal and natural persons
- specializes in the above fields
- contributes to education, training and public awareness
- provides scientific and technological information with the appropriate electronic interface
- produces products and provides services related to its research interests
- represents the country in international organizations with related activities
The Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Water (IMBRIW) includes the Fisheries and the Inland Water Sector. The overall objectives of the research activity of the Fisheries Department of the Institute of Marine Biological Resources in recent years concern the following axes: 1) Achieving rational fish management, 2) developing new fisheries management models, 3) studying the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems and 4) developing a database and appropriate software for the processing of fisheries data. The research and technical staff of the department include scientists specialized in marine biology and ecology, fisheries biology, fish management, fishing technology. The research activities of IMBRIW cover a wide field of marine research and applications and contribute to the provision of a high level of scientific information that supports the development of management plans within an ecosystem approach both in the fisheries sector and in the implementation of directives relating to the development of a strategy to achieve good environmental status, but also maritime spatial planning. The infrastructure of the Institute, as well as its specialized staff, allow for the execution of excellent scientific work.
