National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)

The National Technical University of Athens was founded in the original form of "School of Arts" in 1836, almost at the same time as the state of modern Greece. It was transformed (1887, 1917) to the standards of the Continental European Mechanical Education System, with a solid theoretical background and a standard five-year course. The diploma of the NTUA is equivalent to the Master of Science (M.Sc) or Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) of the Anglo-Saxon Studies System.

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is based on the physical and legal structure of the Higher Education Institution (HEI). Within the framework of article 16 of the current Constitution, article 1 of Law 1268/82, the tradition and its human and logistical infrastructure, the NTUA, through the inseparable unity of studies and research, has as its capital the institutional component of its mission of providing high quality education of excellence and the promotion of science and technology.

The graduates of NTUA have been the main scientific lever of the self-sufficient pre-war development and post-war reconstruction of the country. They were scientist engineers, public and private technical services and companies, and generally acknowledged that they had nothing to envy from their other European colleagues. At the same time, they occupied important positions of teachers and researchers in the Greek as well as the international academic community.

The Department of Naval Mechanical Engineering was founded by a Decree of 15 May 1969 and started operating from the academic year 1969-70 as a Department of the then Higher School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The Department came from the Navy Mechanical Engineering course, which existed at the Higher School of Mechanical Electrical Engineers. The initiative for the establishment of the NMM Department is due to the late Professor V. Frangoulis, who served as Rector of the NTUA during the academic year 1969-70 and Prokritanis during the two previous years.

By the Decree of 15 May 1969 the following three places were established: Ship Theory, Ship Study and Construction and Naval Engineering, paid by the Teachers: Th. Loukaki, A. Antoniou and I. Ioannidis, respectively. On each of these seats there was one (1) Coordinate position, two (2) Assistant positions and one (1) Developer position. From the beginning, the Department of NMM had his own number of admissions, which in his first year of operation was ten (10), while the first graduate engineers graduated in 1974. From the academic year 1975-76, the Higher School of Mechanical Electrical Engineers was divided into the Mechanical and Electrical Schools, and the NMM Department. was assigned to the former. Following the publication of Law 1268/82, by Decree of 26 August 1982, the Department of NMM became independent. At the same time, the Schools of the NTUA were renamed to Sections. The historical name "Schools" was returned by decision of the National Technical University of Athens. in 2002, when the name "School of Naval Architectural Mechanics" is being used.

At the beginning of its activity as an independent department (1982), the number of teaching members were five (5): three (3) Teachers and two (2) Lecturers. However, the General Assembly of the Department proceeded with the announcement of new positions, so that today the number of Faculty members has grown to 27. With the new members of the faculty the School's educational program has been substantially renewed, both in terms of the content of the courses and in terms of the subjects taught, with the addition of new courses. In the School there is also intense and multifaceted research activity, an important station of which can be considered the launching of the Experimental Reservoir in 1979. The research activity is described in detail in a separate information leaflet of the School.

According to the Ministerial Decision 131/483, published in the Official Gazette / No.899 / Issue 2 - 13.12.93, the following four (4) sectors have already been set up and operate:

  • Department of Ship and Maritime Transport
  • Department of Marine and Hydrodynamics
  • Department of Naval Engineering
  • Department of Marine Constructions
